From the Scout Guide Hunt Country

I’ve been fortunate to know Lilla Ohrstrom for some time and with every encounter I am further amazed by her talent, contagious curiosity and generous spirit. I sat down with this favorite local artisan and philanthropist to learn what’s inspired her journey and and what the future has in store…

The Artist & Her Work

1. What inspired you to become an artists and who has been your greatest influence.

“I was asked to make a pinch pot in kindergarten and have loved sculpture ever since. There is something about touching and working with the Earth that is very powerful. Many artists have had an impact on my approach: Segal, Jackson Pollock to name a few, but my father Charles Matheson is my greatest influence. He has always encouraged us to pursue the arts or whatever fueled our creativity and curiosity.”

2. Can you take us through the process, from idea to art?

” A piece will begin from feeling: sadness, loneliness, excitement, joy. I start at that place and see what evolves. I am never certain what will develop until it is finished. But, I also have work that is more intentional. For example, right now I am working on a series of ski sculpture. Depiction of feeling is still at the core. I am trying to capture not only movement of the skier but the rush, exhilaration of the experience. There is not a lot of sculpture available related to the sport, and it is so beautiful and emotive.”
